It is a way to let your significant other know that you truly love them. Free valentine ecards can be used in many different ways and for several purposes. It all depends on which purpose works best for you.

Easy Valentine's Day Jewelry Ideas for Every Budget

For Valentine’s Day, few gifts will make her heart pitter-patter more than the gift of jewelry. It’s the fool-proof way to make a good impression and show her how you feel about her. And whether you’re hesitant about buying jewelry because you’re working with a modest budget, or money is not an object, there are dozens of options for finding the perfect Valentine’s Day jewelry gift for that special woman in your life.

Below, we cover a spectrum of ideas that will make her heart sparkle.

Modest – Less than $100

If your budget is $100 or less – even $50 or less – you don’t need to fear the jewelry store. There are plenty of options to match every woman’s taste and style. A sterling sliver charm bracelet, locket or heart-tag bracelet are beautiful selections that echo the theme of Valentine’s Day.

If you want a gift that includes some sort of stone, and you know her birthday month, you can get a necklace or earrings with her birthstone. Or, you can search for that unique gift that will always remind her of you, such as a miniature Hershey kiss necklace or a locket with a picture of the two of you in it. Add some chocolates and flowers, and you have truly captured the essence of Valentine’s Day for her.

Moderate - $100-$500

If you have a little more money to spend, you have a few more options. In this range, you can find everything from a modest pair of gold earrings to a diamond engagement ring. Few things are more romantic than a marriage proposal on Valentine’s Day – so if you’ve been thinking about proposing, this may be the best time to do it.

A pair of diamond stud earrings are a sure winner – I rarely see a return on this gift. A personalized piece of jewelry with engraving will also make her heart melt – whether it’s a ring with a loving, yet brief, message of love with one of her favorite stones or it’s a bracelet or locket with her initials on it. A personalized gift reflects thoughtfulness – a key sentiment for Valentine’s Day. Lastly, you can purchase a jewelry set – stud earrings in her birthstone or diamonds with a matching solitaire pendant.

Magniloquent - $500 or more

When you have the budget to buy whatever she wants for Valentine’s Day, your best bet is to find something that is over-the-top unique – something you know her friends won’t have. If you’re looking for a gift that will evoke shrieks of delight and that she’ll proudly be showing off for months, diamonds are the easiest route to go.

And she’ll absolutely love a fine jewelry gift that combines the timeless beauty of diamonds with a heart – the signature symbol of Valentine’s Day. The diamond heart pendant is always an elegant choice, and beautifully captures the expression of love. The tennis bracelet is a classic gift, but there are many different combinations of diamonds, heart pendants and charms that can make a beautiful bracelet gift. Also, combining colored gems – rubies, sapphires, emeralds and others – with diamonds, whether it’s a ring, pair of earrings, bracelet or necklace, can create a timeless, treasured gift.

Finding the right jewelry gift does not have to break your budget, but does require some looking around to find the right jewelry store for you. Valentine’s Day jewelry, like jewelry for any other occasion, is a very personal gift. When going through the purchasing process, you need a comfortable, low-pressure environment so that you can take the time to find the right gift for her. The most romantic day of the year should be celebrated – and there’s no better way to honor your love for her than with a gift she’ll treasure all year long. Give the gift of fine jewelry.

Buying Diamonds Online

How do you buy a diamond online and feel safe and secure that you are getting the best value for your money. Shopping for Diamonds online can be very confusing to the lay person. There are millions of jewers, wholesalers and drop shippers online. Where do you go?

1) Look for someone who has a good inventory of certified diamonds. I recomend GIA ( Gemological Institute of America) certified diamonds first as they are the leader in certifying diamonds. Then EGL certified diamonds, however I find them to be a little more giving with there grades so look for a little bigger discount on those diamonds. Stuller certified diamonds are also very nice and come in a impessive box.

2) Start comparing your certified diamonds by using the 4C’s grading system.. The KEY in searching certified diamonds on the web is you can compare a 1.00ct., SI1 clarity, H color with a GIA cert and you will see alot of different prices.. Where they get you is in the cut. Most individuals dont look at that. A 1.00ct round diamond should measure approx. 6.50mm.. Now some 1.00ct diamonds can measure 5.80mm. That would be considered a deep stone and when you get it, it will look like a 3/4 ct diamond. (Note: chech articles on ideal cut diamonds and diamond proportions).

3) Use a Credit card, you have some protection there if it isnt what the dealer says it is. Also look for a great return policy.

4) Make sure there is a contact person you can talk to incase there is a problem. Not email only. I would call first just to make sure.

5) Now to find the best deal. Start comparing all your 4C’s, compare stones with equal proportions, clarity, cut and weight. Once you recieve the diamond take to a GIA graduate gemologist to have it appraised. The certified diamonds will only have the grades of the diamond. Not a price. Its hard to compare non certified diamonds on the web because there is so much misgrading out there even by gemologist!

Good Luck and have fun.

How To Buy A Diamond

There are four factors that a contribute to the diamond value known as the 4 C's: Carat weight,Color,Clarity and Cut

Carat Weight

Carat weight is the easiest of the 4 C's Carat is the measure of the weight of a diamond. the greater the carat weight, the rarer and more expensive the diamond is. Two diamonds of equal carat weight might vary in value depending upon their cut, color and clarity. One carat is divided into 100 points a half-carat stone may be referred to as a "50-pointer" or "50-points".

Color

Diamond color is one of the most important factors ,colorless diamonds or white diamonds (D,E ,F) are rare and more expensive than near-colorless diamonds (G,H,I,J) The color of the diamond is really up to you some people prefer slightly tinted diamonds(J,K,L) that are more affordable, in most cases your best choise would be near colorless diamonds (G,H,I,J)

Clarity

Clarity refers to how free a diamond is from naturally microscopic imperfections ,Diamonds are assigned clarity grades based on what can be detected with ten-power magnification. diamonds with relatively few clarity characteristics are very rare and more expensive ,imperfections show up as minute black or white marks , our advice is to look at several diamonds of different clarity grades and let your eye be the guide!

Cut

A well-cut diamond will allow the maximum amount of light to enter and reflect back to your eye. The width and depth have the greatest effect on how light travels within the diamond it is the cut that provides a diamond with it's brilliance, Many consider cutting quality to be the most important diamond characteristic

Conflict Diamonds (Blood Diamonds)

Conflict diamonds are diamonds that originate from areas controlled by forces opposed to legitimate and internationally recognized governments, and are used to fund military action in opposition to those governments ,Conflict diamonds are those sold in order to fund armed conflict and civil war used by warlords and rebels to buy arms during the devastating wars in Angola and Sierra Leone

What's being done to stop conflict diamonds?

In 2003 The Kimberley Process was introduced requires participants to certify that shipments of rough diamonds are conflict-free covers the entire diamond supply chain, from mine to point of sale ,today less than 1% of all diamonds sold in the US are considered conflict diamonds

Diamond Necklaces What A Gift

With the festive season around the corner, one thing that troubles everyone is what kind of gifts to give to loved ones or to other friends. All the gifts that can be given to those who are close to you, or even just a mere acquaintance, consist of electronic gadgets, bicycle, jewellery, and clothing. The purpose of giving a gift to someone is to make them feel special and to let them know that you care. So this festive season why not to give your wife, girlfriend or mother the most precious gift that is considered to be the ‘best friend’ of any girl: a diamond necklace. A diamond necklace is one gift that always brings a twinkle to a girl’s eyes, and can be considered to be one of the best gifts that can be given.

For many years, people have been restrained with the giving of diamond necklaces due to the money factor, but today there is such a variety available in the market where the price ranges from an affordable £450 to the extravagant £5000. The price depends on the quality, quantity, as well as size, of the diamond. Generally for a diamond necklace, white gold is preferred as it looks much better than normal gold; also it provides more strength to the necklace. Purchasing a diamond necklace is very easy, as a person can just visit a web site and search for any kind of design that can be made by the jewellery shops later on.
Generally, diamonds of very small size are preferred for a necklace and the size of diamond used in a necklace is much less than the one used for an earring or a ring. The only thing is that a high number of diamonds are used to make a necklace, like the diamond chain necklaces. Diamonds come in many shapes, and the most common are the heart shape and the round shape. There are other stones that are embedded into a diamond necklace. But at the time of purchasing or ordering of a diamond necklace one thing should be kept in mind, and that is the proper use of materials as well as the type and size of the diamond to be embedded.

There are various categories in which Diamond Necklaces are available in the market: diamond small drop necklace, diamond illusion necklace, diamond gemstone necklace, diamond ribbon necklace, diamond trilogy necklace, diamond collarets, diamond drop necklace, and diamond wish bone necklace. These days a diamond necklace is not meant for women only. Men also prefer to have a diamond chain that comes with a pendant displaying only one big diamond embedded in the middle. Moreover, many men also prefer to have a pendant with a dog tag boasting a diamond. A diamond chain gives a new look to the person who has a muscular body. All the above mentioned points make the diamond necklace one of the best gifts, not only for women but also for men.

Antique Diamonds

Antique diamonds have exceptional physical features and give a different look to diamond jewelry. They are very rare and may cost more than an average diamond. Today, it is not necessary to travel the work to find an antique diamond that is right for you. Jewelers can now mimic the ancient look of diamonds producing an antique pattern look. Some antique diamonds are a product of customized designs by the customers. The manufacturer of diamond, with the help of new technology can also give the diamonds lace like cuts or a bold, geometric form and imbibe colors in it giving it an antique look.

These antique diamonds then take the form of antique wedding rings, engagement rings, necklaces etc. Apart from women, who normally prefer wearing colorless diamond, men too like to wear diamonds, but their preferences include black or blue antique. The collection of antique diamonds is a part of stylish, designer and luxury jewelry. It also gives a sense of tradition carried on by princely families.

We can easily find a store that sells antique diamonds by connecting to the web. Not only are they available on the Internet, but also there are some online sellers who conduct online auctions to sell antique diamonds. Moreover, it is very important to have knowledge, when purchasing an antique diamond, as it is a rare piece and may not be purchased and sold by many. An individual should always take the guidance and assistance of the "Diamond Buying Guide" before making a purchase. Apart from receiving very expert comments and advice, you will also be provided with a list of stores that sell antique diamonds.

Diamond Types

Diamonds are classified broadly under the categories of Natural Diamond, Synthetic Industrial Diamond and Thin Film Diamonds on the basis of their process of origination.
Diamonds remain to be the most fascinating gift that a woman can ever dream about. The word "diamond" is derived from a Greek word "adamas" which stands for "invincible". Due to its atomic structure, diamond is the hardest natural matter. This expensive and translucent gem is made of carbon.
Diamonds can be scientifically classified into 4 types, known as type 1a, 1b, 2a, and 2b.Diamonds are made of carbon, and are extremely pure, but in almost all diamonds there are tiny proportions of other elements, interspersed within the carbon as part of their crystal structure. These "impurities" are not what are known as inclusions, and are so small as to be invisible even under a very powerful microscope.

Type 1 Diamonds
Type 1 diamonds contain nitrogen. About 98% of all diamonds are type 1a

Type 1a
If the nitrogen atoms are clustered together within the carbon lattice, then the diamond is said to be a Type 1a diamond. Because these diamonds absorb blue light, they can have a pale yellow or brown color. 98% of diamonds are Type 1a.

Type 1b
If the nitrogen atoms are evenly spread out throughout the carbon lattice, then the diamond is said to be a Type 1b diamond. These diamonds absorb green light as well as blue light, and have a darker color than type 1a diamonds. Depending on the precise concentration and spread of the nitrogen atoms, these diamonds can appear deep yellow ("canary"), orange, brown or greenish. Less then 0.1% of diamonds belong to Type 1b.

Type 2
Type 2 are diamonds that absorbed no, or very few, nitrogen atoms.
Type 2a
These diamonds can be considered as the "purest of the pure" - they contain no, or minuscule amounts of impurities and are usually colorless. Unless, that is, the carbon tetrahedrons that make up the diamond were twisted and bent out of shape while the diamond rose to the surface of the earth. An imperfect carbon lattice will make the diamond absorb some light, which will give it a yellow, brown or even pink or red color. 1-2% of diamonds belong to Type 2a.

Type 2b
These diamonds contain no nitrogen - but they do contain boron, which absorbs red, orange and yellow light. These diamonds therefore usually appear to be blue, although they can also be grey or nearly colorless. All naturally blue diamonds belong to Type 2b, which makes up 0.1% of all diamonds.

Is that ok with you? Cool, then wear your favorite yellow diamond ring and to party till dawn (of later)

Buying Tips - Yellow diamonds

Yellow diamonds are judged and sold on the same was as other colored diamonds, on the basis of the four C’s – cut, clarity, color and carat weight. Because that’s why you are buying a yellow diamond – for it’s amazing, heart pounding beauty and the magic it bestows on the luck lady (or man) that wears it. The Alluring Effect Of Diamonds

Many women have been affected by the magical allure of diamonds for many centuries. This is because they are one of the premier gem stones within the jewelry world.

In 1477, the Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond ring as a romantic gesture of his love for her, which resulted in the tradition of giving a diamond for an engagement ring. However, the wearing of diamonds can be dated even as earlier as the fifteenth century.
Diamonds were long worn by kings as a symbol of their strength, courage, and invincibility. Even the Greek word 'Adamas' from which the name of diamond is derived, means unconquerable and hence suggests the eternity of love.

The question that needs to be asked is why does tradition emphasize wearing an engagement diamond ring on the third finger of the left hand? The answer to this question dates back all the way to an early Egyptian belief, which indicated that the vein of love, which was known as Vena Amoris, runs directly from the top of the third finger on the left hand straight to the heart.

Another question that may need to be asked is how did diamonds become so valuable? The answer is simply that any thing that is extremely rare, like diamonds, is also precious.

Diamonds are rare in that only a few survived the hazardous journey from the great depths within the earth to the surface. Although diamonds are the hardest of gemstones, they are still the simplest in composition, because they are made primarily of carbon molecules.

Billions of years ago, the natural forces of high pressure within the earth's crust and the intense heat within the earth transformed these carbon particles into diamonds, within a cauldron of burning magma deep below the earth's surface. Once the diamonds have crystallized into a specific form, the diamond crystals were forced upwards with a volcanic-like pressure, which then broke through the earth's surface to cool in a rock like material, known as Kimberlite, and then pushed into pipes. It is in these pipes that diamonds are mined even today.

With respect to our question on rarity and value, there are approximately two hundred and fifty tons of ore that must be mined and processed from the kimberlite pipes in order to produce a one carat polished diamond of gem quality. Another interesting fact to consider is that only twenty percent of the diamonds mined are gem quality, while the rest are suited for industrial purposes only.

Diamonds are certainly the most international of all gems, then a diamond will probably touch at least four continents before reaching a retail jewelry store. The top four diamond producing countries are Australia, Zaire, Botswana, and the former Soviet Union, which account for approximately eighty percent of the world's supply of diamonds.

Though diamonds were first originally mined in India over twenty-eight hundred years ago, it was not until the discovery of the Brazilian diamond pipes in the early part of the eighteenth century that diamond mining became such an important industry. During the late nineteenth century, the discovery of extensive diamond deposits in South Africa triggered our modern-day diamond industry, which became the result of much better cutting methods.

Top 10 Mistakes of Buying Diamonds

Diamond is the allotrope of carbon where the carbon atoms are arranged in an isometric-hex octahedral crystal lattice. Its hardness and high dispersion of light make it useful for industrial applications and jewelry. It is the hardest known naturally-occurring mineral. It is possible to treat regular diamonds under a combination of high pressure and high temperature to produce diamonds (known as Type-II diamonds) that are harder than the diamonds used in hardness gauges.

Below are some mistakes we usually commit when buying diamonds.

  1. ASSUMING ALL DIAMONDS OF THE SAME COLOR, CLARITY, AND CUT GRADE ARE THE SAME.
  2. ASSUMING LABORATORY GRADING IS ALWAYS ACCURATE AND UNIFORM TO INDUSTRY STANDARDS.
  3. ASSUMING COLOR AND CLARITY ARE THE MAJOR DETERMINANTS IN PRICING A DIAMOND.
  4. ASSUMING THAT CHOOSING A SPECIFIC COLOR AND CLARITY GRADE AND THEN SHOPPING FOR THE LOWEST PRICE WILL YIELD THE BEST DIAMOND.
  5. ASSUMING ALL DIAMONDS ARE WELL CUT.
  6. ASSUMING THAT A DIAMOND CAN BE PURCHASED "BY THE NUMBERS" ALONE.
  7. ASSUMING THAT EXTENSIVE SHOPPING WILL LEAD TO A BARGAIN PRICE ON A DIAMOND.
  8. ASSUMING COLOR IS THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC ASSUMING CLARITY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC.
  9. ASSUMING A DIAMOND CAN BE BOUGHT CHEAPER...
  10. ASSUMING A DIAMOND CAN BE BOUGHT WITHOUT PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE

Diamond clarity is a quality of diamonds relating to the existence and visual appearance of internal characteristics of a diamond called inclusions, and surface defects called blemishes. Clarity is one of the four Cs of diamond grading, the others being carat, color, and cut. Inclusions may be crystals of a foreign material or another diamond crystal, or structural imperfections such as tiny cracks that can appear whitish or cloudy. The number, size, color, relative location, orientation, and visibility of inclusions can all affect the relative clarity of a diamond. A clarity grade is assigned based on the overall appearance of the stone under 10x magnification.

Pink Diamonds

Pink diamonds are same in nature as normal diamonds. Normally, we find traditional, colorless diamonds, but there are also colorful diamonds are found naturally. They have the same structure as normal diamonds. The distinguishing feature of color is added to them due to the presence of certain minerals.

Pink diamonds are most preferred as compared to other gemstones. They are usually difficult to find in jewelry stores and are also rare, white or colorless diamonds. The number of pink diamonds available in nature is decreasing day by day The scarcity and rare nature of the pink diamonds, keeps the price exceptionally higher than normal white diamonds, leaving many deprived customers behind.

Women usually wear pink diamonds. They are available in many shapes and sizes. Pink diamonds should not be confused with pink sapphire. The pink diamonds are usually pale pink and have a tint of pink in them, whereas a pink sapphire has a darker pink color and are less expensive then pink diamonds. If you want to own any ornament with a pink diamond, you can readily combine small pink diamonds with other gemstones -- even with white diamonds. This gives you the privilege of having the most desired pink diamond at a reasonable price.

Pink diamonds are one of the hottest gemstones an individual can have. They are the frequent purchases of celebrities and trendsetters. A research once conducted by students of gemology school revealed over one thousand five hundred different types of pink diamonds. Wearing Earrings as a Fashion Accessory

Of all the pieces of jewellery earrings are the most popular. They have been worn for 1,000's of years and have been worn by both men and by women. Whether it is a pair of classic studs or a pair of Bet Lynch chandeliers we all love to wear this piece of jewellery.

I remember when I was a little girl playing in my grandmothers jewellery box and admiring all the beautiful pairs of earrings that she used to keep in there. The fashion then was for something that sparkled, so many wear made from cut glass and diamante. I longed for the day when I would be able to have my ears pierced so that I could wear these beautiful pieces of jewellery.

The 60's when my Mum was in her teens saw the fashion of wearing fun fashion jewellery and earrings where made from bright plastics and acrylics. Bright round circles of colour and big hoops were the fashion in earrings. When I look at old photos of that time i can see how fashion had really changed around from my Grandmothers time when jewellery was a serious business and in Mums time it was fun bright and funky a complete change around.

In my youth of the 80's the fashion was for earrings to be big and a statement. Bright coloured glass was used to imitate Jewells set in gold coloured metal. Earrings were made into opulent designs to match the times. Earrings were big as was hair and the shoulder pads, and like every girl of that time I was a follower of all the fashion trends. The new romantics saw men wearing diamante earrings and brooches and it was not unusual to see men wearing women's earrings. I also remember the fashion being for wearing odd earrings or just one.

The punks took the art of wearing earrings to a new level having more than one piercing in their ears and wearing multiple pairs of earrings in one ear. As well as wearing piercings in other places on their face. I wonder what they think when they look back now.

Today I am a little bit more conservative when it comes to my choice of fashion earrings. I still like to think that I am fashionable but classic designs are what I look for now. Small gold hoops or studs made from semi-precious stones are what I would chose for during the day and for evening wear I may be a little bit more adventuress in my choice of earrings design.

I wonder what the fashion for earrings will be in the years to come. One thing I can be sure of is that people both men and women will still be wearing earrings as they have for 1,000's of years.

Diamonds That Are Fracture Filled

Would the Mona Lisa be as captivating without her smile or does Beethoven's ninth symphony sound as majestic when it is played on a kazoo? With these questions in mind, it must be asked why would you purchase a fracture-filled diamond.

The increasing number of fracture-filled diamonds that are being offered by many jewelry retailers has raised similar questions for the jewelry consumer when ever they are preparing to purchase a diamond. Fracture-filling, which is also known as a clarity enhancement or less kindly, diamond retreading, is a legitimate process by which disfigured diamonds are being made to appear whole. During the fracture filling process, the blemishes and fractures within a damaged diamond are filled with a glass-like paste which shares the same optical properties and color as the host diamond.
When this process is finished, all the imperfections of the fractured-filled diamond are invisible to an untrained eye, and the visual appearance of the diamond has been greatly improved. In fact, the presence of the fracture-filling paste often can only be detected using gemological instruments. If fully disclosed to the consumer, then the fracture filling is an acceptable treatment for damaged gemstones such as a diamond.

However, problems do arise when the value of a fracture-filled diamond is misrepresented or the impermanence of the fracture-filling paste is not fully disclosed to the consumer. You need to remember that fracture-filled diamonds are actually repaired diamonds, and as a result should cost significantly less than untreated diamonds with the same weight, color, and clarity.

You should protect yourself against treated or misrepresented diamonds by always observing the two important rules. First, when you are purchasing a diamond or precious colored gemstone, be sure to obtain an independent gemological appraisal to assure that the gemstone's quality and value have been accurately represented. Next, be sure to require the seller to state in writing whether the diamond has been fracture-filled or otherwise treated, because any such treatments should be fully described and their limitations disclosed.

This process was invented in 1982 as an attempt to improve the apparent clarity of a damaged diamonds by filling fractures and fissures with an invisible glass-like paste. Since fractured-filled diamonds are becoming increasingly prevalent in the market place, it is important for the jewelry consumer to keep several facts in mind when shopping for a diamond.

At wholesale, fracture-filled diamonds sell for approximately fifty percent of the cost of a similar untreated diamond. Unfortunately, there are disreputable retailers who have and will misrepresent fractured-filled stones as more valuable untreated diamonds.

At other times, honest, but uninformed jewelers, have unknowingly sold treated diamonds that have been supplied by their wholesalers. In either case, the consumer has been sold a gemstone of lesser value and quality at an inflated cost.

Prior to purchasing any costly gemstone, it is important to have all stones independently examined and appraised. Diamonds are forever, but unfortunately, the current fracture filling processes may be less permanent. Tests by independent gemological laboratories have shown that the fracture-filling material may breakdown during normal jewelry repairs and cleaning, while other tests have shown that some fracture fillers will discolor and become cloudy after several years of exposure to sunlight.

When a treated diamond is purchased, it is critical that any limitations or special care be fully disclosed by the seller, and the manufacturer should fully guarantee, in writing, the fracture-filling process. The best protection for the jewelry consumer is education and the advice of an independent expert.

A Diamond In The Rough

The diamond is an emblem of romance and an everlasting asset to its beholder. A diamond is a native crystalline carbon, which is the hardest known mineral to mankind, which is nearly colorless.

When a diamond is transparent and free from flaws it is highly valued as a precious stone, and is used industrially especially as an abrasive, but also as a piece of substance. It is just an allotrope of a common chemical agent, but ever since Emperor Maximilian gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond betrothal ring in 1477, nothing has glittered like the king of gems. The shine is due to the mineral's refractive power, but Mary probably did not think a lot about that when she showed off her rock at the bridal shower.
The emperor revolutionized the business of getting engaged, setting off a trend that is responsible for much of a thirty-seven billion dollar industry. Credit must also be given to the famous and persistent A Diamond Is Forever marketing campaign invented in 1947 by De Beers, the international diamond conglomerate that recently settled a class-action lawsuit accusing it of monopolizing supplies and fixing prices.

Many diamonds vie for the title of most famous, including the forty-five point fifty-two-carat Hope, which resides at the Smithsonian Institution, the sixty-nine point forty-two-carat Taylor-Burton, which is a pear-shaped rock from Cartier that Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor; and the enormous Cullinan, which is over three thousand carats when it was discovered in South Africa in 1905. The Cullinan was cut into nine sizable stones, including the Star of Africa, which is a manageable five hundred fifty point two carats and is mounted in the British Royal Scepter and on display in the Tower of London.

Whatever its size, each diamond is completely unique in its own way and each seems to be uniquely valued. Consider a survey conducted by the consulting group NPD, which showed sixty-three thousand people a pair of three-carat diamond stud earrings and asked what they were worth. They were informed that they were from a Wal-Mart store, automatically the participants fixed the value at ninety-three dollars. Later the same diamond was presented to them, but when they were informed that they actually came from Tiffany's, the value swelled suddenly to over eight hundred dollars.

The anatomy of a diamond should consist of four Cs, because more than fifty years ago, the Carlsbad, California-based Gemological Institute of America developed the International Grading System for diamonds. The four Cs stood for the color, clarity, cut, and carat weight of a diamond. The cut of a diamond is its shape, proportion, symmetry, and polish, which are also known as its make. If a diamond has a good make, then it will be brilliant, fiery, and have scintillation, which means it creates a sense of movement and looks alive.

A truly colorless diamond is rare and those with the least color are the most expensive. Diamonds within the normal color range, usually have hints of yellow or brown, but a diamond with fine color has little or no color that you can see. Some have rare fancy colors such as blue and pink, which are extremely expensive.

The vast majority of diamonds are not perfectly clear, because they have internal and surface irregularities, which are called inclusions and blemishes. Grades of a diamond range from flawless to included. In weight, some diamonds are magic sizes, which means a half-carat, a carat, and so on. There is only a sliver of a difference between a full carat gem and one that weighs in at point ninety-nine carat, but the price can vary significantly.
